Connection
The value of community and connection cannot be underestimated.
In the tapestry of modern parenthood, it can be challenging to dedicate time to forging connections with our family. Sharing a meal each day is an opportunity to listen to each other, and show that we care. I remember fondly mealtimes with my parents, as we reflected on our daily highlights and experiences. I was always encouraged to imagine myself in the shoes of my neighbours, and to value other people’s perspectives.
Drawing inspiration from reading, I recall the words of Atticus Finch in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee: “You never really understand a person until you consider things form his or her point of view…until you climb in his or her skin and walk around in it.” These words always resonate with me.
At the heart of our family connections lies a set of values: accountability, responsibility, security. It is no wonder that mealtimes can be so valuable. Eating together creates a sense of belonging, and exposes young people to new words and experiences. In this way, we are investing in our futures.
At Flinders we believe that connecting with others, during devotions, assemblies and classes, builds a strong community. Through these encounters we seek to understand each other, and to offer encouragement.
As a community, let us continue to connect with each other and build long-lasting relationships.
Hebrews 10 : 24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love, not giving up meeting together, but encouraging one another.
