Flinders Christian Community College Tyabb, recognises the important developmental phases in a student’s life as they progress from Year 7 to Year 12. Our skilled Secondary Teaching Teams are supportive and adaptive, innovative and encouraging, with a passion to facilitate your child’s personal and academic development through the key transitional years of their lives.
As your child enters young adolescence, the school environment will change to meet the unique challenges of this developmental stage. These years can be turbulent for some of our students, so our Years 7 – 9 Programs are designed to help your child develop resilience and independence, as well as supporting teachers in sharing the journey with them.
For this reason we offer numerous leadership opportunities to students including Student Representative Council and House Representative roles. Student leaders are appointed through an interview and election process to show students the democratic process in action.
House activities will be an important feature of your child’s Secondary School life, with their efforts and positive behaviour being affirmed by the award of House merit points. They will get to compete in a number of House events, including sports competitions, debating/oratory competitions and an annual drama and music festival.
If your child has musical interests, they will have the option to take part in our annual school musical production, or join a range of orchestras, choirs and ensembles.
One of the highlights of your child’s school year is likely to be the annual camp experience, which helps students form close bonds with each other and develop their social, physical and team-building skills (all while having plenty of fun!)
In Years 10 - 12 our students continue to experience an academically rigorous program supported by strong pastoral care and a full range of extra-curricular opportunities.
Our goal during these years is to engage, inspire and challenge students to reach their full potential. All of our camps, excursions, and extra-curricular activities at this level are designed to contribute to their personal and academic development. We hope that our students will continue to participate fully in school life during these years, through co-curricular activities and the many leadership opportunities available to them.
During Year 10 we continue to provide a rich, useful, stimulating and enjoyable educational experience to help students further develop skills and make choices about their future.
In addition to our core subjects which include Maths, English, PE, Religion and Society and History, students can select two elective subjects each Semester. Our elective program is based on a personalised, student‐centered approach that gives your child control over their own study program. We want them to explore options and discover their purpose in the world, so we will strongly encourage them to expand their horizons and explore a range of subject options.
Flinders offers both the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and VCE - Vocational Major (VCE - VM) pathways in Years 11 and 12. Through partnership with other schools and TAFE institutions, these pathways can also be combined with a broad range of Vocational Education and Training (VET) Courses.
Our College provides excellent facilities to support students in their studies and transition to university and / or work life. They will also receive expert career counselling, to help them understand their options and make informed choices about life after school.
During Year 11 (Units 1 and 2), students will complete twelve VCE Units over the course of the year – six in each semester.
At Year 12 level (Units 3 and 4), students will complete ten VCE Units – five in each semester. Units 3 and 4 studies are designed as a sequence so they will need to complete both units.
If VCE students have an interest in vocational study we can connect students with their chosen VET course at local TAFE institutes.
The VCE Vocational Major is an applied learning program within the VCE, completed over a two-year period. The VCE VM allows students more flexibility to pursue their interests, in an applied learning environment.
VCE VM Students will undertake 16 - 20 units of study over two years, including a minimum of VCE Unit 3 & 4 sequences or more in their learning programme. Structured workplace learning and VET courses form part of the VCE VM programme.
The School TAFE Alliance for Regional Training (START) is a partnership between 12 local schools including Flinders Christian Community College, and Chisholm Institute that aims to provide Vocational Education and Training (VET) and other pathway options for young people.
Located on the grounds of the Frankston campus of Chisholm Institute, the START Trade Training Centre (TTC) was officially opened Friday 8th May 2015. It was purpose built to accommodate local skill shortages with flexibility in design to allow for pathways of the future.
START prioritises work towards activities that engage all consortium schools and focuses on industries that are experiencing skill shortages and high job prospects with an emphasis on students gaining skills and knowledge that enhance their employability pathways and assist in their lifelong learning journey.
